Conceptual design

Poor conceptual designs force users to learn unfamiliar concepts, manipulate too many objects, or work out how different objects relate. Simple conceptual design is the bedrock of good User Experiences. On the other hand, bad conceptual design can lead to unusable products.

For instance, if you were building a house, it is important to consider the structure of the house: what rooms you need, the purpose of each room and how people move between the rooms. Look and feel aspects such as the decoration and accessories will be subsequent. Conceptual designs are like architects’ plans from the users’ point of view.

Getting the conceptual design correct at the beginning avoids the risk of costly redesign further down the line. Think about how expensive it would be to add a second bathroom once all the plumbing has been done. Our contextual enquiry services and customer insight workshops ensure that customers' needs are known before design begins.

A clear conceptual design allows all project members to get a shared understanding of the design, avoiding wasted time and effort later on.

We will work with you to:

  • Identify the key tasks that users need to do
  • Define the user interface objects and attributes users will manipulate
  • Develop rich task scenarios illustrating how users will use the proposed design

This work is delivered as a design specification to share with your developers or to initiate detailed user interface design.
